On Sunday, 13th April 1997, a Commemorative Service was held within the Phillips Memorial, Godalming, to honour Jack Phillips and to remember those who perished on the RMS Titanic.
The service was conducted by the Rev’d John Ashe, Vicar of Godalming.
The Lesson (Psalm 130) was read by the Mayor of Godalming, Councillor Mr Christopher Slyfield.
The Anthem (God so loved the World by J. Stainer) was sung by the combined choirs of Farncombe and Godalming Parish Churches.
An original Eulogy was read by Amanda Le Boutillier.
The Address was given by Rev’d Timothy King, Rector of Farncombe.
Flowers were laid by John Young (on behalf of Godalming), by Mr I McNamee of GEC Marconi Communications, and by a member of Farncombe Church Choir.
Prayers were led by the Rt Hon. Virginia Bottomley.
The hymns were “Eternal Father, strong to save . . .”, “We rest on thee, our shield and our defender” and “Jerusalem”.
A retiring collection was taken for the Royal National Lifeboat Institute.
